ISBD Early Mid-Career Committee Mentorship

Here you will find information on the Society’s mentorship program and videos from an EMCC mentorship symposium. The mentorship program is available exclusively to ISBD members; however, you can access a wealth of expertise through the Society’s Community of Practice, where peer-to-peer exchange can be incredibly valuable.

Mentorship Application Process

The ISBD mentorship Program Application period is now closed.

The EMCC has established a Mentorship Program.  The program is available exclusively for ISBD members and matches those at early stages of their career with more senior members of the Society for career advice and support.  Details of the program follow.

  1. The first step is to carefully read, accept, and return a signed Mentee Acknowledgement Form to the ISBD office via email to chadd@isbd.org.
  2. After receipt of the form, ISBD will email prospective mentees a link to the mentorship database and application form to submit their CV, the names of up to 3 identified mentors (Ranked by priority), and a one-page personal statement, including a description of what they want to get out of the mentorship experience and how that will help them at this point in their career.
  3. Once the application is received, the EMCC will reach out to mentors with the mentees application and check whether they agree/not agree with the potential match. Contact to specific mentors will take place on a “first-come, first-served” basis.
  4. Once the mentor agrees and the mentor-mentee pair is formed, an introductory email will be sent to the mentor-mentee pair with a detailed description of the program (including a reminder of the program’s expectations), with a template for a mentorship agreement attached.  As soon as the contact between both parties is initiated, mentors and mentees will have the freedom to define the specific format of their mentorship relationship, including frequency of meetings, duration, and specific milestones.
  5. A follow up email will be sent 6 months after the start of the mentoring interactions.  The email will contain a survey form to assess metrics of mentorship success and format, including satisfaction, frequency of meetings, and interest in continuing the program.

Below you will find two videos from the EMCC events held in conjunction with the 2022 ISBD Experience. These events, in addition to serving as the first public presentions of the Committee, were focused on mentorship and targeted toward different geographic regions to get a broad sampling of input. Both events include perspectives of senior ISBD members reflecting on the role of the mentor as well as junior members of the EMCC relating their personal experiences. The result is a rich discussion containing many valuable lessons on mentorship. We hope you enjoy these offerings.
