Understanding Bipolar Disorder

This section of the website is for those who may be newly diagnosed or those simply seeking to support people with lived experience of bipolar disorder. For the general public, educating oneself about bipolar disorder can be a powerful way to dispel the stigma that is often associated with the condition.

For those living with bipolar disorder, learning about the illness and the therapies that are available to treat it (psychoeducation), can empower those with bipolar disorder to take an active role in management of symptoms and in living well with bipolar disorder.

Bipolar 101 gives some of the basics about the illness, while the patient resources section contains trustworthy information developed by the Society to address various aspects of living with bipolar disorder, including management of co-occurring conditions (e.g. substance abuse),treatment during pregnancy and postpartum periods, and bipolar disorder in children and adolescents, among others.
