Samuel Gershon Awards for Junior Investigators

The International Society for Bipolar Disorder (ISBD) recognizes the vital role of developing the next generation of leaders in the field of bipolar disorder and will offer 4 awards for original research submissions. These awards are open to psychiatric trainees, postgraduate students and junior faculty up to the Assistant Professor rank from around the world, independent of age, nationality, sex or race.  The awards will be presented in conjunction with the 8th International Conference on Bipolar Disorder from 25-27 June 2009.

Awards will be based on the originality of the content, as well as the significance of the findings reported, and will be evaluated by an international scientific panel under the auspices of the ISBD. Please note, all panel decisions will be final. 

Award Recipients must commit to present their work as a poster presentation at the 2009 ICBD (abstract submission deadline is February 5th 2009) and to prepare their manuscripts for submission to the Bipolar Disorders Journal.

In order to promote research interest in bipolar disorders and provide opportunities for those in developing countries, at least two of the four awards are offered for those from developing countries.

Deadline for Submissions
Applications must be received no later than January 15th 2009.  Award Recipients will be notified by April 1st 2009 and announcement held until the ICBD meeting in June.

The Paper:
The topics of the papers presented must address aspects of bipolar disorder.  Applicants must show a potential for long term commitment and contributions to the field of bipolar disorder.

The manuscript should be based on original work that has not been published elsewhere, and should demonstrate significant contribution from the author submitting for this award (i.e. first author on the paper). The paper format could be submitted as a full-length regular article (maximum 3000 words) or as a brief-report (maximum 1500 words) suitable for publication in the Bipolar Disorders Journal.

1) A completed application form
2) A brief letter of support from sponsor
3) An abstract of no more than 300 words. 
4) An updated Curriculum Vitae (2 page max) including a list of publications if present.
5) A brief (250 word) description of the nominee’s current activities, career goals, and a rational in support of the nomination.
6) An original, unpublished manuscript addressing some aspect of bipolar disorder
